If you want to easily jump into the world of retro games, be sure to read this article.

Basic information about the device

This is a portable game console specializing in retro games, developed by Blaze Entertainment.

The Evercade EXP-R is a handheld gaming console developed by Blaze Entertainment that specializes in retro games.
Its biggest feature is that it uses a system that emphasizes physical media, where you play games by inserting cartridges into the console.
The system aims to bring the joy of collecting and owning games back into the modern era.

This model is positioned as a "refreshed version" based on its predecessor, the Evercade EXP , and focuses on making it easier for new users to join the Evercade ecosystem.

Body specs:

Display: 4.3-inch IPS screen (800x480)
Processor: 1.5Ghz processor
Memory: 4GB internal memory
Battery: 3000mA battery for 4-5 hours of gaming
Dimensions: 192.7 mm x 78.5 mm x 20.7 mm

The new charcoal grey and turquoise colours replace the previous white model.
Other features include portrait mode and a new textured rear grip for comfort.

The game comes with three titles: Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II, and Tomb Raider III .
However, the Evercade EXP-R does not include a TV-out port and cannot be connected to a TV or monitor.

In terms of hardware, the device comes equipped with a 4.3-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels.
This is the same spec as the previous EXP model, and it's bright and offers good viewing angles.
This resolution is particularly well-received for displaying pixel art in retro games.
The CPU is 1.5Ghz and the built-in memory (storage) is 4GB.
The audio is provided with stereo speakers.

The battery capacity is 3000mAh, which is said to allow for approximately 4 to 5 hours of gameplay.
However, other reviews state that the battery life is around three and a half hours, so the battery life assessment varies depending on the actual usage and reviews.
It can be charged via the USB-C port (cable included).
It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The device measures 192.7 x 78.5 x 20.7mm (7.76 x 3.1 x 0.8 inches) and is slightly heavier than the previous model, but still fits comfortably in the hand.
The overall build quality is said to be "improved" and "feels solid and sturdy" compared to the previous model.
The design is "simpler and more modern" and comes in a new color scheme of charcoal gray with turquoise accents (the previous Limited Edition model was also available in matte black).

The appeal of Evercade EXP-R

There are many things that will appeal to retro game fans.

Affordability and accessibility

One of the biggest attractions is its affordable price.
It is priced lower than the previous EXP model, making it a more affordable option for users looking to try out a new retro gaming experience using physical media.

High-quality IPS display

The Evercade EXP-R features a bright and clear 4.3-inch IPS display.
The 800x480 resolution is ideal for displaying the pixel art of retro games in clear detail, and is highly praised as a major improvement over the previous model.
In particular, it is said to be capable of pixel-perfect display.
Combined with a wide viewing angle, you can enjoy games comfortably from various angles.
Some also say that there is less light leakage from the screen than with the previous model.

Arcade experience with TATE mode

It supports portrait mode , which allows you to play arcade games in portrait mode with optimal display.
By holding the console vertically, you can enjoy vertical scrolling shooters and other games with a feel similar to the original.
This is a very attractive feature for fans of arcade games.

The joy of collecting and playing with physical cartridges

A rarity in the modern gaming market, the physical cartridge system offers the feeling of "owning" a game and the joy of displaying a collection on a shelf complete with box and instructions.
The cartridge also allows you to play the game offline after purchase, as it allows you to play the game without an internet connection.
Currently, over 50 different cartridges have been released (as of December 2024), offering a wide range of retro game collections with over 500 titles in total.
This includes games under official licenses for various platforms, including Amiga, C64, and Atari.

Plenty of built-in games and bundled cartridges

The Evercade EXP-R comes with games ready to play right out of the box.
Notably, it comes with the Tomb Raider Collection 1 cartridge, which includes the three PlayStation 1 versions of Tomb Raider games .
This means you can play these classic titles from the day you get your console.
It doesn't include the 18 Capcom games that were included with the previous model, but the new addition is the popular Tomb Raider game.

Improved battery performance and efficiency

Greatly improved battery life , typically lasting up to 3.5 hours.
This is a big improvement compared to the original EXP, which was around 2 hours.
The EXP-R achieves this improvement thanks to a more efficient chipset.
The processor also doesn't get too hot, making long periods of gaming more comfortable.

Improved quality and usability

There's been some small quality improvements , like less light leakage from the screen, the materials used feel of higher quality, and the cartridge doesn't sit as tightly.
Additionally, game controls can now be adjusted on the fly, allowing users to customize the function of each button.

Easy updates via Wi-Fi

The device has built-in Wi-Fi functionality , making it easy to update the system.
This ensures you always enjoy the latest software.

Points to note

While it has many attractive features, there are some things to keep in mind when considering purchasing one.

One of the most notable differences is the removal of the Mini-HDMI output port found on the previous Evercade EXP model.
This means you can no longer connect the console to a TV and enjoy games on a larger screen.
For those who value playing on a TV, this is an important consideration.
If you want to play on a TV, you may need to consider other Evercade devices with HDMI output (e.g., the Evercade VS-R).

Additionally, the EXP-R does not include the 18 Capcom games that were pre-installed on the previous EXP model.
This may be disappointing for users who were looking forward to certain Capcom titles.
Instead, it comes with the Tomb Raider game.
Depending on the game collection you want to play, you'll want to consider which model is best for you, though the Evercade's extensive cartridge library is available for purchase separately.

The official battery life is 4 to 5 hours, but some sources say the actual play time is around 3.5 hours, so there is a wide range of opinions depending on the source.
If you plan to use it when you are out for a long time, it is a good idea to bring a mobile battery or similar with you.
