The world of the medieval French tile-placement game Carcassonne expands even further with the Inns and Cathedrals expansion. This first expansion breathes new life into your experience by introducing new strategic elements while retaining the core fun of the game.

■ New buildings that enhance strategic play

This expansion adds 18 new terrain tiles to change the landscape of the game, most notably the two new buildings that give the game its name.

• "Inns" are facilities that can be built along roads, and they have the potential to earn higher points than regular roads. When a road including an inn is completed, you will earn 2 points per tile instead of the usual 1 point. If you can incorporate an inn into a long road, you can earn a large number of points at once.
• "Cathedrals" are majestic buildings that can be built within cities. When a city containing a cathedral is completed, each tile and each coat of arms will earn you 3 points instead of the usual 2 points. This will make the strategy of expanding and completing your city even more important.

However, these buildings also come with calculated risks: if a road or city, including an inn or cathedral, is incomplete at the end of the game, no points will be awarded. This forces players to make strategic decisions: do you want to aim for a high score or make sure you accumulate points?

■ "Large meeple" gives you an advantage in the battle for dominance

This expansion introduces a new follower called the "Big Meeple." Big Meeple is worth two regular meeples, giving you a significant advantage in the fight for control of features. Big Meeple can be placed using the same rules as regular meeples, and can be placed in cities, roads, monasteries, etc. to strengthen your control.

Also, when used as a farmer, it counts as two farmers in that field, which has a big impact on the score calculation at the end of the game. How to use the limited number of meeples and when to use the large meeples has expanded options, leading to deeper thinking and strategy.

■ Supports up to 6 players to enjoy with more friends

The Inn and Cathedral expansion includes a sixth player (eight pink meeples and one large meeple), allowing you to enjoy Carcassonne with even more friends and family. It also adds point tiles for easier scorekeeping.

Completing one lap around the scoreboard (50 points) earns you a 50-point tile, which flips over to reveal 100 points after another lap. This makes managing high scores easier and makes competing in the expanded medieval world even more enjoyable.
