Watergate, a two-player strategy game that recreates the historical political scandal

Watergate is an intense, card-driven, two-player strategy game based on the most infamous political scandal in American history, beginning with the June 1972 arrest of five men for trespassing at the Watergate building in Washington, D.C., and culminating in the dogged investigation by Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the revelation that espionage had been directed at political opponents, and the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974.

The unique feature of this game is the asymmetry between the players: one player plays the role of a journalist trying to uncover the truth, while the other plays the role of the Nixon administration trying to cover up the allegations, each with their own unique deck of cards and completely different victory conditions.

The Nixon Administration player wins by building enough momentum to last until the end of the President's term. The Journalist player wins by directly linking two informants to the President with sufficient evidence. A tense game unfolds between the two sides, as the Administration tries to destroy evidence by any means necessary.

The game board is made up of two main parts: the "Evidence Web" and the "Evidence Track." The core of the game is strategic card play and a tug-of-war between tokens: Evidence, Initiative, and Momentum. Each card requires a choice: use its value to move tokens or use it for a special ability. Momentum directly affects Nixon's side's victory, while Initiative is a key factor in determining the starting player for a round.

The game mechanics include highly strategic elements such as actions/events, connections, hand management, and tug-of-war, and the play time is approximately 30 to 60 minutes. The game is suitable for ages 12 and up, and is designed to be enjoyable even for players with no prior knowledge of the history of the Watergate Scandal.

Designed by Matthias Cramer and published by multiple publishers including Capstone Games, Watergate has won various awards, including Game of the Year in 2019.

Uncover the truth as a journalist or cover up the allegations as the Nixon administration in this historic strategy game. Which side will you play? Relive the biggest political scandal in American history with Watergate.
