"Kites" - A cooperative real-time kite-flying game expressed using an hourglass.
Let's all work together to keep the kites flying high in the sky! Imagine a colorful kite floating in the sky. It's beautiful to see it gracefully dancing on the wind, but if you're not careful, it could fall to the ground.
Kites is an exciting, cooperative, real-time board game that depicts the delicate world of kite flying through the medium of an hourglass. Players must work together to keep the kites, represented by colorful hourglasses, in the air. A race against time, cooperation with teammates, and perfect timing - when all three elements are combined, can you successfully keep all the kites flying?
Game Basics and Flow
In Kites, six colored hourglasses act as kites. Each hourglass falls to the ground in a different time, with the fastest being red, which takes about 30 seconds, and the slowest being purple, which takes about 90 seconds. Each color has different characteristics.
Setting up the game is very easy. First, lay all the hourglasses flat with the sand all the way to one side. Deal cards according to the number of players (5 cards for 2-3 players, 4 cards for 4 players, 3 cards for 5-6 players), and place the remaining cards in the center as a deck. Stand up the white hourglass and the game begins! This is where the race against time begins.
Players take turns choosing a card from their hand, placing it on the table, and flipping over the hourglass that matches the color depicted on the card (standing up any sleeping hourglasses). After playing a card, players draw a card from the deck to replenish their hand, and the turn moves to the next player.
point
If there is only one icon on a card, you can flip over the white hourglass instead of that color. This is an important rule that broadens the range of strategies. However, once the deck is empty, you can no longer flip over the white hourglass, which significantly changes your strategy at the end of the game.
Victory conditions and the importance of cooperation
The greatest appeal of this game is cooperation. If all players can play all of their cards, they win. However, if even one hourglass runs out of sand, the game is over.
You need to share information and choose the best move, calling out things like, "Blue is dangerous!" or "I don't have red, so please help me!" The sense of accomplishment when you succeed is exceptional, amidst the sense of anxiety and tension as the hourglass ticks down.
The appeal of "Kites"
-
Simple yet deep gameplay
The rules are very simple, but the time difference between the hourglass and the combination of cards in your hand create new strategies every time you play. It's designed so that even first-time players can enjoy it right away, but you'll never get bored of playing it over and over again. -
Real-time tension
The physical time limit of the hourglass creates a unique sense of tension in the game. Making decisions while watching the sand fall brings a sense of realism that cannot be experienced in digital games. -
Participatory communication
Because all players work together to win, conversations naturally arise and the atmosphere becomes lively. A major feature of this game is that it is "chaotic yet has a strong sense of cooperation." -
Easy to enjoy in a short time
Each game takes about 5-10 minutes to complete, making it perfect for a little free time or as an icebreaker before playing a full-scale board game. It's easy to get started, yet offers a great balance of giving you a sense of accomplishment. -
Gameplay reminiscent of The Mind
This game is especially recommended for fans of "The Mind," as the two share a unique atmosphere of explicit communication and tacit understanding. However, "Kites" has a physical element in the form of an hourglass, making it more intuitive to play.
