Test your creativity and strategy! Welcome to the world of espionage through word association in the team-based word association game "Codenames."
Codenames is an innovative espionage-themed board game. Players are divided into two teams, and each team's "spymaster" knows a secret word and must relay clues to their teammates to contact the correct agent.
25 cards are laid out on the table in a 5x5 grid. Each card has a code name (encrypted name) such as "Cat," "Carrot," or "Satellite." Among these cards lie agents on your team, agents on the opposing team, innocent passersby, and deadly assassins who must not be touched.
Game flow and rules
The gameplay is very simple. First, players are divided into two teams, red and blue, and each team selects one "Spymaster." A special "Spy Distribution Card," visible only to the Spymaster, shows which codenames are on their team, the opposing team, civilians, and assassins.
The game alternates, with the Spymaster providing hints of "one word" and "number of words to guess" to help players guess the word that represents their team's agent. For example, the hint "fruit, 3" suggests that there are three words related to "fruit" on the cards on the table that represent their team.
Team members use these hints to guess which card is their agent. If they guess correctly, they can choose the next card, but if they choose a civilian or an agent from the opposing team, their turn ends. The most frightening thing is to touch an assassin, which will instantly cause them to lose the game.
