This is a visual version of the popular, award-winning game "Codenames," and has also received The Dice Tower Seal of Excellence.
By using pictures instead of words, the book transcends language barriers and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
With simple rules but deep strategic depth, this party game is sure to be a hit with family and friends.
Game world and story
"What are these strange symbols on the map?"
This is a code that indicates the point where a spy can make contact with agents.
Two rival spy organizations are engaged in an information war over the hiding places of their respective operatives.
Each team's spymaster (leader) knows where their operatives are hiding, but cannot directly share that information.
You'll need to communicate the location to your team's field operatives using coded clues.
Intelligence officers are expected to be clear-sighted.
Deciphering the code incorrectly can lead to an unfortunate encounter with an enemy agent, or worse, an assassin.
How to play the game
Players are split into two teams with equal numbers and experience.
Standard play requires a minimum of four players (two on each team).
Each team will choose one player to be the spymaster, while the remaining players will be field operatives.
Arrange 20 picture cards on the table in a 4x5 array.
These represent locations where you can make contact with operatives.
Each card features a unique image with multiple elements, allowing for multiple interpretations.
Visible only to the Spymaster, the key cards show which pictures represent your team's operatives, enemy operatives, civilians, and dangerous assassins.
Game Flow
The Spymaster announces one word that is a common clue to the pictures that represent the locations of their team's operatives, along with the number of pictures that the clue represents.
The field agent must use the clues to guess the picture the spymaster intended and select the card.
If the card you select is a spy on your team, you are correct and can continue guessing (up to the number of cards declared + 1).
If the specified card is a civilian, the turn ends; if it is an enemy spy, the enemy team gains an advantage; if it is an assassin, the player is immediately defeated.
The first team to contact all of their operatives wins.
Game Features
The appeal of "Code Names: Pictures" is not just a word association game, but the interpretation of the pictures and how they communicate them.
Each painting combines multiple elements, sometimes combining two things.
For example, associations are important, such as specifying a bicep mark when given the hint "strength, 2 pieces," or guessing what is on display when given the hint "exhibition, 2 pieces."
Also, as a component of the game:
- 14 agent cards in two colors
- 1 double agent card
- 4 ordinary people cards
- 1 Assassin card
- 60 key cards
- 140 cards with 280 different pictures
- 1 rule book
- 1 card stand
Tips for playing
The leader should find commonalities between their team's drawings and think of appropriate hints.
It is important for intelligence officers to be able to read the thought patterns of their leaders.
If you're playing for the first time, it may be easier to understand if you start from the spy side.
Interpretation of the painting varies from person to person.
Enjoy playing while communicating with your teammates.
