"Hughes & Cues" is a new board game that unfolds with a sense of color and words.
A new form of communication that communicates color using only words
When you hear the word "apple," what color comes to mind? A bright red apple? Or a green apple?
"Hues & Cues" is an original party board game that lets you enjoy the relationship between colors and words. On a colorful game board with 480 different colors, players can enjoy a new type of communication game by trying to get other participants to guess specific colors using only words.
Different people have different images of colors. The greatest appeal of this game is the conversations and discoveries that arise from these differences. It's incredibly interesting to experience through the game how different people perceive colors, and you'll likely make new discoveries every time you play.
With simple rules, Hughes & Cues is fun for people of all ages and genders, and can be played by 3-10 players ages 8 and up, over a 30-minute gameplay period. Designed by Scott Brady, it was released in 2020.
Simple to play yet deep
Each turn, the player (parent) draws a card and chooses one of the four colors shown on it. Then, without directly saying the name of the color, they give a one-word hint (cue), and the other players place a piece on the color associated with that hint. Next, the parent can give another hint of up to two words, and the player places a second piece.
For example, you might have to guess the colors that are associated with words like "sunset," "jewel," or "sea," or conversely, think of words that other people would easily associate with colors.
Scoring system and game progression
Scoring is determined by location within a 3x3 frame centered on the selected color: 3 points for a hit, 2 points for being within the frame, and 1 point for being adjacent to the frame.
The parent player who gives hints can also earn points according to the number of pieces placed within the frame, so they must give hints that are easy to understand but not too vague. This sense of balance makes the game even more interesting.
The special charm of "Hughes & Cues"
The game requires players to distinguish subtle differences in color, so it's recommended to play in good lighting. Interestingly, some reviewers say that even those with color blindness can enjoy the game's representation and interpretation of colors, rather than the perception of colors themselves.
You can also customize the basic rules of the game and add your own original themes and rules, allowing you to enjoy playing the game over and over again with a fresh feeling.
In what situations can you enjoy it?
Hues & Cues is especially recommended for large groups of 6-10 people, making it perfect for family game nights or parties with friends. It's also popular for being intuitively enjoyable for those interested in art and color, as well as children who aren't analytical.
Another appealing feature is that there is no trickery or deception involved, so even those who are not confident in their board game skills can easily participate. It is a game that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from beginners to experienced players.
Player experiences and impressions
Each time you play, you'll discover something new: "You might think of bananas when you hear the word yellow, but your friend might think of yellow butterflies." These differences in color perception spark conversations, laughs, and sometimes surprises.
The game time is just right, not too long and not too short, taking about 30 minutes to complete. This allows players to enjoy multiple games and even beginners to easily participate.
A new journey into the world of color
More than just a game, "Hughes & Cues" offers a valuable experience that allows you to experience the diversity of our color perception and linguistic expression. The difficulty and fun of expressing color in words, and the joy of discovering how different people perceive color, are the special charms of this game.
Why not embark on a new journey into a world of color with your family and friends? With simple rules, Hughes & Cues offers new discoveries and conversations every time you play, and is sure to add vibrant color to your board game collection.
