The world's largest steam locomotive in the palm of your hand - Revell 1/87 Big Boy Locomotive
"I want to assemble that giant railway king with my own hands" - here is a plastic model that will make the dreams of such railway fans come true.

Revell's proud "1/87 Big Boy Locomotive"

This is a full-scale HO scale model that precisely reproduces the legendary steam locomotive "Big Boy".

Overwhelming presence and precise reproduction

This exquisitely sized HO scale (1/87) model is made up of 87 parts and boasts an imposing overall length of 46.4cm when fully assembled. The actual steam locomotive is approximately 40m long and weighs approximately 540 tons, and is recreated in the palm of your hand.

The integrally molded boiler is very impressive, and even the butterfly dampers and the interior of the driver's cab are meticulously crafted. Of particular note is the faithful reproduction of the Big Boy's distinctive 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement (known in Japanese as 2DD2). These complex driving wheels and coupling mechanisms can be reproduced in detail only possible in HO scale, further enhancing the model's appeal.

Functional features such as the front cow catcher (front protective grill) and the ladder for the coal transport tender have not been overlooked. Precision track parts measuring approximately 48cm are also included, which are designed to enhance the display effect after completion.

The joy of building your own Big Boy

Revell's proven technical expertise has resulted in this kit being categorized as a Level 3 model for experienced builders, but the detailed instructions included make it a worthwhile challenge. By assembling it using paint and glue, you can experience the joy of more serious modeling.

The car is basically all black, but the gunmetallic color of the boiler and the silver color of the main rods add to the realism of the car. Two Union Pacific decals (No. 4006 and No. 4023) are available, so you can choose your favorite version.

"Big Boy": A legendary giant who left his mark in railroad history

As its name suggests, it is renowned as one of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives in railroad history. In the late 1930s, Union Pacific Railroad instructed its research and development department to develop a locomotive capable of pulling a 3,600-ton (maximum 4,200-ton) freight train up the steep grades from Ogden, Utah to Wasatch Pass without a helper locomotive. This led to the birth of the Big Boy, with its unique 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement.

This arrangement was unique to the Big Boy, and it was an amazing design that had two four-axle running gears on one steam locomotive. A total of 25 cars were manufactured in two groups: Class 1 in 1941 and Class 2 in 1944. With an overwhelming maximum output of 6,290 horsepower, they were able to fully demonstrate their power even on routes with steep gradients and sharp curves.

The last freight train operation was in July 1959, and most of the locomotives were retired by 1961, but one of them, No. 4014, was restored in 2019 and is still preserved in operable condition.

The appeal of HO scale

HO scale (1/87) is a standard that is widely used worldwide for railway models. Because it is a larger scale than N gauge, it is characterized by the detailed reproduction of complex mechanical parts such as pantograph underframes, bogies, and coupling parts, allowing you to enjoy more realistic models.

This Revell 1/87 Big Boy Locomotive takes advantage of the HO scale to condense the massive, lifelike appearance into a palm-sized figure without sacrificing its power and precision. The track width (gauge) is also standardized at 16.5mm, so it can be combined with other HO scale products.

The Revell 1/87 Big Boy Locomotive is a detailed and impressive plastic model of a legendary locomotive that symbolizes the Golden Age of American railroading. From the assembly process to the finished product, it's a masterpiece that allows you to enjoy the pinnacle of railroad history and technology.

Why not recreate the majesty of the Big Boy, one of the world's largest steam locomotives, with your own hands? This is sure to satisfy not only avid railway model fans, but also serious scale model enthusiasts.
