Watergate, a two-player strategy game that recreates the historical political scandal
Watergate is an intense, card-driven, two-player strategy game based on one of the most infamous political scandals in American history.
The film is based on historical facts, beginning with the arrest of five men for trespassing at the Watergate building in Washington, D.C., in June 1972, and culminating in the dogged investigation by Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the revelation that espionage had been directed at political opponents, and the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974.
Game Features
The unique feature of this game is the asymmetry between the players.
One player plays the role of a journalist trying to uncover the truth, while the other player plays the role of the Nixon administration trying to cover up the allegations.
Each player uses a unique deck of cards and fights to achieve completely different victory conditions.
- Nixon Administration players win by building enough momentum to last until the end of their presidency.
- The journalists win if they can directly link the two informants to the president with sufficient evidence.
- The government side tries to destroy the evidence by any means possible, leading to tense negotiations between the two sides.
Game Board and Mechanics
The game board consists of two main parts: the Evidence Web and the Evidence Track.
The game centers around strategic card play and a tug-of-war between tokens such as evidence, initiative, and momentum.
Each card gives you the choice of using its numerical value to move tokens or as a special ability.
Momentum directly impacts victory for Nixon's side, and initiative is a key factor in determining who starts the round.
The game mechanics include highly strategic elements such as actions/events, connections, hand management, and tug-of-war, and the play time is approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
The recommended age range is 12 years and up, and the book is designed so that no prior knowledge of the history of Watergate is required to enjoy it.
Designers and Awards
It was designed by Matthias Cramer and has been released by several publishers, including Capstone Games.
Watergate has also won various awards, including Game of the Year in 2019.
