The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls Official Card Game A multiplayer card game where sacrifice, betrayal, and strategy intersect

Game Overview

"The Story of Isaac: Four Souls" is a full-scale card game for 2-4 players based on the popular game series. This is a game that you can enjoy heated negotiations with friends, with themes of sacrifice, betrayal, and item hoarding.

Carefully designed by Edmund McMillen, the game incorporates cooperative play, bartering, and betrayal, ensuring every playthrough is different. Familiar characters, bosses, and items from the series are turned into cards, weaving new stories right at the table.

How to progress through the game

Each turn, players battle monsters while playing loot cards and using items. By defeating monsters, you can earn more items, loot, and sometimes even souls, which are necessary for victory.

At the start of the game, you'll have two shop slots, two monster slots, and an additional room slot if you're using the Requiem expansion. Each slot is filled with a card face up from the corresponding deck.

Players will be randomly given a character card and a corresponding starting item card. Your character starts the game in an inactive (landscape) position and your starting item is charged (portrait).

A wide variety of card types and strategies

  • Treasure Cards : They are items placed in front of the player and have gameplay-changing abilities. Cards with silver borders have static and triggered abilities, while cards with gold borders have activated abilities.
  • Loot Cards : It is held in a player's hand and can only be played when they have priority and a loot play is available. Played loot cards are placed on the stack and take effect after they are resolved. Decorations are special loot cards that become items after being played.
  • Monster Cards : When it enters play, it becomes either a "monster" with a status block or an "event" without one. Monsters can be attacked and defeated to receive rewards. "Bosses" in particular are tougher, but tend to offer more valuable rewards, including souls. Events are discarded immediately after they are resolved. Also, "curses" are a type of event that the active player can inflict on other players.

Game Objectives and Victory Conditions

The goal of the game is to be the first to collect four souls. Souls can be earned by defeating monsters, and some cards have a soul icon on them. Act strategically and cooperate or betray other players to achieve victory.

Dynamic turn-based gameplay

Each turn consists of a "Start Phase," "Action Phase," and "End Phase." During the action phase, you can perform various actions such as activating abilities, playing loot cards, attacking monsters, and purchasing items. Attacks are resolved using a D6 die. If the dice roll is equal to or greater than the target monster's evasion value, it will be a hit and damage will be dealt to the monster. On the other hand, if the value is below the evasion value, it will be a miss and the attacking player will take damage. This tense dice roll adds unpredictability to the game.

Purchases can be made with the top card of the treasure deck or items in the shop slots for 10 cents. If you kill a monster, you will get a reward for it and a soul if you have the soul icon.

Negotiations between players

One of the fun things about this game is the negotiations between players. Bartering between money and favors is encouraged, and situational bargaining expands the range of strategies available. However, there is a rule that items and loot cards cannot be directly traded.

Rich game components

The game includes 340 cards, 100 custom coins, a deck of D6 and D8 dice, and a detailed rulebook. The Requiem expansion requires the base game. The expansion "Requiem" introduces new room cards, allowing the active player to discard a room and replenish with new room cards at the end of the turn after defeating a monster.

Advanced Game System

For experienced players, additional soul cards called "bonus souls" are available. This allows for more strategic gameplay. Additionally, systems such as "priority" and "stack" determine which players can act and when. The stack is a temporary place for loot, abilities, and rolls, and has deep rules that require them to be resolved in last-in, first-out order.

The appeal of the game

"The Life of Isaac: Four Souls" is a card game that combines the deep strategic nature of a board game with the fun of multiplayer play. It offers a well-balanced gaming experience that tests your strategic thinking, your ability to negotiate with other players, and sometimes even the luck of the dice.

Another attraction is the unique world view, which centers around the themes of sacrifice and betrayal, and the distinctive art style by Edmund McMillen. This is a card game that can be recommended not only to game lovers but also to fans of the "Biography of Isaac" series.
