"El Hazard" TV Series Now Available on Blu-ray for the First Time - A 90s Fantasy Otherworld Masterpiece Reborn in High Definition Remaster -
The long-awaited Blu-ray release of "El Hazard," an epic fantasy adventure set in the mysterious world of "El Hazard," where the real world and another dimension intersect, is now available. This series, which aired from 1995 to 1996 and contains 26 episodes, is a pioneering work in other-world fantasy anime and continues to be beloved by many fans today. A team of talented creators, including director Hiroki Hayashi, character designer Yuichi Nakazawa, and composer Shigetaka Nagaoka, has come together to create a masterpiece that symbolizes the golden age of 1990s anime.
A fantasy set in another world on a grand scale
The story begins when the protagonist, Mizuhara Makoto, a member of the high school science club, encounters a mysterious beautiful girl he awakens in an ancient ruin. After being transported to another dimension along with his rivals, student council president Jinnai Katsuhiko and teacher Fujisawa Masamichi, Mizuhara and his friends each acquire special abilities, and become embroiled in a war between the human nation of Roshtaria and the insectoid race Bagram.
■ A multi-layered worldview and detailed story development
The work's defining feature is its "dual-structure worldview," where the physical laws of two worlds, the real world and El-Hazard, intersect. Makoto Mizuhara's scientific curiosity and Katsuhiko Jinnai's desire for power are depicted in conflicting ways, intricately changing the nature of the war in the other world. The story incorporates the innovative concept of a causal loop, and presents an original plot in which the past and future are connected in a spiral. This innovative technique is said to have influenced later works such as "Steins;Gate."
■Charming characters
- The protagonist, Mizuhara Makoto (voiced by Iwanaga Tetsuya), is a science club student with logical thinking and adaptability. He uses his knowledge of archaeology to uncover the mysteries of ancient ruins.
- On the other hand, Katsuhiko Jinnai (voiced by Ryutaro Okiayu) is a student council president who uses his cunning intellect as a weapon. In the other world, he gains the ability to communicate with insect-like lifeforms and pursues his own ambitions.
- Rune Venus (voiced by Kikuko Inoue) is the first princess of the Kingdom of Roshtaria. Although intelligent and compassionate, she is a complex heroine who struggles with the heavy responsibilities of being a member of the royal family.
■ Stunning visual beauty and music
The visual expression of the work unfolds a unique worldview that blends medieval architecture with a highly technological civilization. In particular, the battle over the ancient weapon "Eye of God" beautifully depicts the contrast between organic biological design and geometric mechanisms. The music by Shigemitsu Nagaoka is an exquisite blend of ethnic melodies and electronic sounds, beautifully expressing the unique atmosphere of another world. Many memorable scenes, where visuals and music blend beautifully, such as the temple collapse scene in episode 18, are still talked about today as a milestone in 90s anime.
■High-definition remaster
This Blu-ray release features a remastered version that was carefully color-corrected after scanning the analog production materials from the original broadcast. The texture unique to the cel animation era, created by the craftsmanship of animation production company AIC, has been beautifully reproduced using modern technology. Bonus footage also includes creditless opening and closing scenes and a collection of valuable initial setting materials. Enjoy the world of "El Hazard," which left a significant mark on the history of fantasy anime set in other worlds in the 1990s, in the highest quality possible.
