Salem 1692 is a psychological warfare game that lets you experience historical witch trials.
Set in Salem, Massachusetts, 1692, a time when fear of witchcraft gripped the village, Salem 1692 is a historically accurate card game that combines psychological warfare and social deduction. Players take on the role of prominent Salem villagers of the time and must either track down the "witch" threatening the village or deceive the villagers by pretending to be a witch.
The game is language-independent (with some text), and the rulebook is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Korean, Italian (Deluxe Edition rulebook), and Hungarian (Deluxe Edition cards).
The core of the game
The core of the game lies in the "Trial" cards. Each player is dealt five face-down Trial cards that reveal their true identity ("Witch" or "Not A Witch"). The Trial deck consists of one Constable card, one Witch card equal to the number of players (one for five or fewer players, two for six or more players), and a number of "Not A Witch" cards. Players arrange their Trial cards face-down in any order they like to hide their true identity.
During the course of the game, players collect and use cards to accuse or defend other players.
- Use red Accusation cards (Single Accusation, Evidence, Witness) to cast suspicion on other players. When the total number of accusations placed in front of a player reaches 7, the player who placed the 7th Accusation card can choose one of the target face-down Trial cards and reveal it.
- A player who has all of their Tryal cards turned face up is out of the game.
Green cards have one-time effects, such as forcing other players to skip turns or swap cards, while blue cards have continuous effects that are placed in front of players. Black cards have immediate effects, and when the Night card is activated, the Witch closes her eyes to decide which player to eliminate, and players with Magistrate cards can use Gavels to protect specific players.
Victory Conditions
Victory conditions vary depending on the faction.
- If the witch eliminates all the villagers, she wins.
- The villagers win when they find all of the "Witch" Trial cards in play.
An important rule is that you cannot play cards that directly affect yourself (except for placing a Black Cat on yourself).
Game Features
Salem 1692 is an easy-to-learn social duction game rich in persuasion, manipulation, trust, and betrayal. The accusation card play system brings a fresh perspective to the genre. Relive events in this mix of tension, politics, and religious extremism, where knowing who to trust is key to survival.
For players 4 to 12+, the gameplay time is approximately 20-40 minutes and is recommended for ages 14+. It's perfect for parties and large groups, and can be played without a moderator. A free moderator app and web tool are also available.
Published by Facade Games, the game is designed by Travis Hancock, has received the Dice Tower Seal of Excellence, and is the first in Facade Games' Dark Cities series.
The packaging is also distinctive, with an ancient leather binding decorated with gold foil designed to resemble a fake old book, which closes with a magnet and can be easily blended into an ordinary bookshelf.
Enjoy a tense and exciting psychological battle where screams of "Witch!" might wake up your neighbors.
