Game Overview

Joraku - A strategic trick-taking game set in Kyoto during the Warring States period
Strategy and bargaining unfolds in the ancient capital
Joraku is a strategy board game set in Sengoku period Japan that beautifully combines trick-taking and area control. Players become Sengoku daimyo and lead loyal generals to Kyoto, aiming to expand their influence in each region. Compete for prestige points by skillfully utilizing the effects of cards and determining when to attack and when to retreat in battle.

This game offers deep strategy and tactics in a reasonable playing time of 40-60 minutes, and is a 2-4 player game aimed at ages 15 and up, so it can be enjoyed by a variety of players.

Game Objective and Overview

As a Sengoku daimyo, you will lead your warlords and aim to advance towards Kyoto. The goal of the game is to expand your influence in each region, increase your fame, and become the ruler of the entire country.

The game consists of three rounds, each of which progresses in the following order: "Recruitment Phase" → "Skirmish Phase" → "Prestige Phase."

Preparation for Battle (Recruitment Phase)

You will receive a new battle card.

Skirmish Phase

Each player plays one card and resolves its effect. The winner of the victory card is determined, and the winner checks their influence to gain prestige points.

Power struggle (Prestige phase)

Players' influence in each area is ranked and they earn prestige points based on a scoring chart on the map.

After three rounds, the player with the most prestige points wins. In the event of a tie, the player with the higher number on their daimyo card (the player farthest from Kyoto) will be the winner.

Rich game components

Joraku includes the following components:

  • 4 daimyo pieces
  • Warlord pieces 4 colors, 10 pieces of each color
  • 4 fame pieces
  • 6 types of Daimyo cards (Azai Nagamasa, Hashiba Hideyoshi, Oda Nobunaga, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Imagawa Yoshimoto, Takeda Shingen)
  • 21 battle cards (1-6 and ninja cards, one of each color)
  • 1 victory card
  • 12 expansion rule cards
  • 8 summary cards
  • 1 game board

Strategic card play and piece placement

Battle cards include number cards (1-6) and ninja cards, each with different effects.

  • Number cards (1-6) can be used to place a warrior piece or use action points (AP).
  • Ninja Cards are powerful cards that allow you to place a warrior piece in any area.

Action Points (AP) can be spent as follows:

  • 2AP Move a Daimyo piece to an adjacent region
  • 1AP Move a general to an adjacent area
  • 1AP Return enemy generals to stock in the area where the daimyo is located

Victory Cries and Power Struggle

Players who win a battle receive a "Victory Cry" card and can shout a victory cry. In the region where the victory cry is made, you will compete for influence points and gain prestige points.

At the end of each round, a "power struggle" takes place, where players compete for influence over their daimyo and generals in each region to earn prestige points. The point value of the area changes each round, and the Samurai cube (military commander piece) remains on the map between rounds. Planning for the future is important.

Versatile play styles

The beauty of Joraku is that it caters to a variety of playstyles:

  • Expansion Rules Before the game begins, randomly draw two expansion rule cards and apply them to the game. There will be various changes, such as changes to how fame points are calculated, fame points when a daimyo piece enters Kyoto, and fame points when cards of the same color are played in battle.
  • Two-player rules There are rules for two players to each play two colors, or to add a neutral virtual player. You can place the fictional player's daimyo pieces and general pieces, and move the fictional player's general pieces during battles.

The appeal of the game

Joraku's greatest appeal lies in its exquisite balance of tactical card play and strategic area control. The gameplay combines three elements: card play to outwit your opponents, area control with loyal samurai, and gaining fame, resulting in new discoveries and strategies every time you play.

The value of the area changes with each round, and the general pieces remain on the map, making players think about the balance between short-term profits and long-term strategy. It offers a depth that will never bore you, no matter how many times you play.

Set in Japan during the Sengoku period, Joraku allows you to become a feudal lord and march to Kyoto. A world of battles filled with strategy and tactics awaits you.
